When I first started as a graphic designer, accessing image libraries was a costly endeavor. We had to buy usage rights for images from suppliers like Getty Images, and these would arrive as transparencies. Besides the hefty price tag for the images themselves, we faced additional expenses to drum scan them into high-resolution digital formats suitable for print.
Another option was purchasing an expensive CD of royalty-free images. These CDs, selected from printed catalogs rather than online ones, were the most economical choice for obtaining even a single image. We would then maximize our investment by using as many of the disk’s images as possible. I still have a couple of these CDs filled with classic '80s hairstyles and shoulder pads.
Today, the landscape has transformed dramatically. The Internet has revolutionized how we source images by enabling a crowdsourcing model where anyone with a decent camera and eye for photography can contribute. Websites like Dreamstime and Shutterstock, among many others, now provide both users and contributors with innovative ways to access a vast array of images and potentially earn money.
Earning Through Dreamstime as a Photographer, Designer, or Illustrator
Dreamstime has been particularly successful for me, so I’ll use it as an example. I use Dreamstime both as a graphic designer and as a contributing photographer. Here’s a simple breakdown of how it works:
- Submission: Contributors upload their stock photos for review.
- Review Process: Due to the high volume of submissions, it can take several days to receive feedback.
- Approval: Images are either accepted into the catalog or rejected, with brief feedback provided.
Dreamstime accepts more than just photos; you can also submit graphics or illustrations, provided they function as stock images. The catalog includes everything from infographic templates to brochure and stationery mockups. The only limit is your creativity—you can even submit stock video footage, though I haven’t tried that yet.
Once an image is accepted, it becomes searchable on Dreamstime based on the keywords and descriptions you provide. When someone purchases a license for that image (with prices varying by resolution), you earn a commission.
If you have numerous high-quality images in the catalog, this can turn into a significant income stream. Funds can be transferred to your PayPal account or other preferred payment methods once they accumulate.
Creating Popular Images for Dreamstime
To determine which images will be popular, Dreamstime offers monthly trend reports via an e-newsletter that highlight the most searched terms. Additionally, assignments and contests can spark your creativity. The Media Room provides useful resources for learning and inspiration.
Seasonal events and milestones like Christmas, Summer, Independence Day, and The Olympics also require fresh stock material. Submitting relevant graphics or photos in advance allows you to capitalize on these opportunities.
Earning as a Dreamstime Affiliate
You can also earn money as a Dreamstime affiliate. At the bottom of the Dreamstime website, under the ‘Community’ column, you’ll find a link for ‘API / Referral’. This page offers various links you can use to promote Dreamstime. Each link contains a unique ID that tracks your referrals. When someone clicks your link and makes a purchase, you earn an affiliate commission.
Commissions vary based on what’s purchased, from single images to higher-value subscriptions, affecting the amount you earn. The more referrals you generate, the higher your potential earnings.
Signing up for a Dreamstime account is free and straightforward, allowing you to explore these opportunities yourself. Sell photos Now here
